This San Marzano tomato is produced as a numbered editionis known and appreciated all over the world for its characteristics, which are enhanced by the transformation into “peeled”.

 

The San Marzano tomato grown in Agro Sarnese Nocerino, between Naples and Salerno in South Italy. 

 

Deliciously fleshy tomatoes with a vibrant red colour and a dense and even texture.

 

The presence of a series ofconcomitant factors such as the Mediterranean climate, the extremely fertile and well-structured soil, the skill and experience acquired by farmers in the production area over the decades has contributed to its success worldwide, crowned in 1996 by the recognition of the European Union as D.O.P. (the protected designation of origin).

 

The characteristics enhanced by the product are the typically sweet and sour taste, elongated shape of the berry with longitudinal parallels depressions, bright red color, scarce presence of seeds and placental fibers, skin of bright red color and easy to peel.All this characteristics with the chemical-physical features, make the San Marzano tomato unmistakable.

 

The protected designation of origin (DOP) designates only the "peeled" and the "Peeled fillets" from the processing of fruits belonging to the San Marzano ecotype or improved lines of it (the DOP specification certifies two standard of product).


This San Marzano tomato is produced by an agricultural cooperative founded in 2005 to enhance the productions of individual members that differ generations are dedicated to the cultivation of high quality typical products of Campania region of Italy. A group of farmers who produce Pomodoro San Marzano D.O.P. is not only from the field to the table, following the entire supply chain and therefore guaranteeing high quality, food safety and above all goodness, joining the "Slow Food presidium".

 

The DOP protocol indicate the cultivation must be exclusively in openair and the technique must be the vertical breeding of plants with the use of wood supports ensuring the respect of the centuries-old tradition, the harvest is done strictly by hand.

Due to the high number of hours of manpower required, this cultivation technique has a strong impact on production costs.

  • Native to Mexico and Central America, the tomato was introduced in Europe by the Spaniards in the 16th century under the name "tumatl", derived from the Aztec.

    The food value of this crop was discovered only later, not before the eighteenth century, when it was widespread in the various countries of the Mediterranean.

    According to some testimonies of the oral tradition, the first tomato seed arrived in Italy around 1770, as a gift from the Kingdom of Peru to the Kingdom of Naples and that would be was planted right in the area that corresponds to the municipality of San Marzano in Campania region on South Italy.

    From the first tomato seed in San Marzano the origin of this famous tomato, which over time with various actions, has acquired the characteristics of the current ecotype. According to other testimonies, the certain proof of the famous ecotype origins date back to 1902 between Nocera, S. Marzano and Sarno villages.

    Gourmet delight, the scent of Italian Sundays and of the special holidays. Year after year the San Marzano red flavouring sauce was a must for the traditional pasta from Gragnano and Torre Annunziata villages.

    The San Marzano tomatoes had great appreciation towards the beginning of the 1900s, when were born arose conservation industries who produced the famous sauce "peeled".

    In the 1980s, the crop underwent a drastic reduction, both in terms of surfaces and production, for phytosanitary but also economic reasons (with particular reference to the expensive cultivation technique).

    During last years the pure genetic line was recovered, conserved and improved by the Campania Region and now consolidated by the Protection Consortium who have made it possible its international relaunch. 

    Today the San Marzano DOP tomato is a product of choice in European and American markets.
